Kākāriki marae is located about 9 km northeast of Ruatōria on Waiomatatini Road. Its principal hapū is Te Whānau a Rākaihoea of Ngāti Porou iwi.
The wharenui is called Rākaihoea, the wharekai is Waitekaha. The marae connects ancestrally to Horouta waka, the maunga Hikurangi and the awa Waiapu.
