Pākōwhai marae is located between Pātūtahi and Waituhi, 20 km inland from Gisborne. It belongs to the hapū Te Whānau a Kai of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki.
The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta, the awa Waipaoa and the maunga Maungahaumi. It was once known as Pākōhai in the local dialect.
