Rāroa marae is located 29 km south of Whakatane. The primary hapū is Tamaruarangi of Ngāi Tūhoe.

The whare tipuna is named Te Poho o Tanemoeahi. Rāroa connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the awa Tauranga.
