Ōkapu marae is located on the inner reaches of the Aotea Harbour, 8 km north of Kawhia township and close to Matakowhai Bay. The primary hapū for this marae are Ngāti Te Wehi and Ngāti Mahuta.
The whare tupuna is called Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Te Wehi. Ōkapu marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the maunga Karioi, the moana Aotea and the awa Waikato.
