Ōwae Whaitara marae (also known as Manukorihi Pā) is located in Waitara. Its principal supporting hapū are Ngāti Uenuku & Ngāti Kura. Kai Tangata, Pukerangiora, Puketapu, Otaraua, Ngāti Te Whiti & Ngāti Rāhiri are all hapū of Te Ati Awa Kāhui who all still strongly support Owaewhaitara marae - Manukorihi Pa.
The eldest whare on site was opened in 1887 and named Te Whaitaranui-a-Ngārue. The wharekai, opened in 1921, is named Tamawahine. The overflow whare, opened in 1932, is named Tamatāne. The whare whakairo, opened in 1936, Te Ikaroa-a-Māui.
