Takipu marae is located just south of Te Karaka, some 30 km inland from Gisborne. It belongs to the hapū Te Whānau a Taupara of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki.
The whare tupuna is named Te Poho o Pikihoro. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta, the awa Waipaoa and the maunga Maungahaumi.
