Takitimu marae is located on the eastern banks of the Waipaoa River, north of Pātūtahi on the Poverty Bay flats, some 20 km inland from Gisborne. The marae belongs to the hapū Te Whānau a Kai of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki.
The whare tupuna is named Te Poho o Whakarau Oratanga a Tamure. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta, the awa Waipaoa and the maunga Maungahaumi.
