Mangatū marae is located in Whatatutu, 50 km inland from Gisborne. It connects to iwi Te Aitanga ā Māhaki and Ngā Ariki Kaiputahi. There is a complex history between these iwi groups.
The wharenui is called Te Ngāwari. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta.
