Whakarae marae is located 50 km south of Ōpōtiki, in the Matahi Valley, Te Urewera. The primary hapū is Te Whakatane of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The whare tipuna is named Toi Te Huatahi. Whakarae connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the awa Tauranga and Waimana.
