Whenuakura marae is located approximately 9 km east of Pātea, alongside the Whenuakura River. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Hine of the iwi Ngāti Ruanui.
The wharenui is named Matangirei. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea and the maunga Taranaki.
